Body Products

It's been a long road to finding body products that I enjoy using and that are good for me...

I haven't always been a 'natural' girl...

When I was in college I remember wasting money at Bath & Body Works, The Body Shop, and the Macy's perfume counter. If only I had known that with all those fruity/girly scents and products came a loaded whiff of chemicals!

After years of battling migraines and other health problems, I began to research chemicals in fragrance, body and home care products. As mentioned before the mountain of information was quite large, but one of the standout findings was that artificial fragrance was a big no-no!

The 'fragrance' that hides in so many products today is silently causing more harm than good. Take a look at an ordinary shampoo/conditoner, body lotion, deodorant, body wash...look at the ingredients...somewhere among the list of unpronounceable ingredients will be 'fragrance' or 'perfume.' That fragrance/perfume may smell delicious, but is the tiny tip of a chemically saturated iceberg. These chemicals gradually can build up in a persons system and cause problems...for me it was migraines.

After eliminating and reducing my exposure to artificial fragrance/perfume my migraines have reduced greatly. I rarely get headaches. Every so often I am tempted by a beautiful bottle of Chanel, but then I am reminded as I walk by the perfume counter and feel an instant migraine looming...it's not worth it. Plus, natural products can smell beautiful and make me feel pampered too!

It took me a couple years to sort through the limited amount of healthy/safe products, but in the end I've found a couple favorites. Not only do I feel better, but I also have saved much money over the years (that I gladly now spend on a Dr. Hauschka lipstick!)

Lip Faves

I've always been a lip balm and lip gloss girl. They are easy and don't require a mirror to apply...

But...as of late...lipstick and lip tints have slowly begun to make their way into my makeup bag. I have been lured by their glossy colored magic. I'm really loving my Nvey Eco lipstick #369- it is the perfect candy apple red...for the perfect 50's red lip!

A big requirement for my lippies is that they don't contain any parabens and other yuckies...since we do 'eat' what we put on our lips. My only exception is my Korres and Tarte products which are 'natural' and more green than most mainstream prodcuts, but do contain some unmentionable ingredients. My reasoning for these is that I don't use them that often, and they are just so smooth and creamy it's hard to resist them... :)

Here are some of my favorite lippies...

I especially can't live without my Dr. Hauschka and Weleda lip balms! They are both super moisturizing and conditioning.

Polyvore Nouveau

The first art print I ever purchased was an Alphonse Mucha. It was instant love...the ethereal  vibe, the Art Nouveau swirls and detail, and the peachy pink hue that drenched the entire print....Since then I have moved and misplaced the print, but am always on the lookout for his reproduction prints. This is my current favorite:

This Polyvore fashion collage is from this inspiration. An early 1900's inspired outfit. Hope you enjoy!

Favorite Facial Care Products

I've been a skin care junkie for as long as I can remember...

I remember the first feeling of using skin products as a teenager...feeling a little more grown up, a little more like a woman as I applied the tingly cool Noxema cream to my skin.

I remember standing at the Clinique counter for the first time- lost in the sea of toners, creamy yellow bar soaps, and snobby women in white lab coats. I will never forget how disappointed I was when I tried out the 3-step system...somehow wishing that the price tag and the name brand would magically transform my oily dotted face to smooth porcelain perfection.

I remember the not so distant past of chemical laden products that littered my bathroom countertop...Philosophy, Proactive, Neutrogena, Clean & Clear, Aveeno...and my angry inflamed skin that accompanied them.

A couple years ago I began to research ingredients in skin care products and discovered a mountain of information. To put simply...this mountain mainly consisted of:
1.the harm that chemical packed 'mainstream' products can have on our skin and overall health- due to that fact that our skin is a living organism and absorbs what we put on it.
     2. and that organic, gentle and 'green' products are the way to go! No parabens, sulphates, artificial fragrance and colors, phlatlates...to name a few.

Now, I can't say that any products are solely a miracle in themselves - but I believe that treating the skin with a gentle, intelligent, and thoughtful touch has helped me much over the years. I am still on the road to finding balance with my skin, but I believe this has to do with whole body health (eating organic, hormone balance, stress control, drinking more water...) But for the time being here are a few of my favorite facial products...

Just to clarify...The honey is great as a calming and moisturizing 'mask.' Even though I tend to have oily blemished skin, I still get dry/flaky spots and honey helps to moisturize, calm redness, and is also antibacterial which is great for breakouts! The papaya is a wonderful gentle enzyme exfoliant- makes my skin super smooth!

Any questions? Feel free to leave me a comment! ;)

Two wonderful websites I order from and highly recommend are:

Polyvore Midnight Snack

Sleep has evaded me...and I am curled up with my laptop, sweet sleeping cat, and peppermint tea.

I have recently discovered Polyvore and am an instant addict! This is my first outfit/ensemble creation, and I am embarrassed to say how long I've spent creating it... :) I can see much time wasted in the future...so much fun! Why waste time on Facebook when one can waste it creating dream outfits? I only wish there were more 'vintage' clothing and accessory options...but I think I discovered some inspired pieces. How do you think I did on my first Polyvore venture?

Well little blogging world, sleep is now calling...
